Who We Are
The Fred Powell SRU Wrestling Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and reviving the storied wrestling tradition at Slippery Rock University (SRU). Named in honor of legendary coach Fred Powell, who led The Rock’s wrestling program from 1967 to 1991 with a strong winning record and developed numerous talented athletes, the Foundation works in partnership with SRU to restore varsity wrestling as a competitive NCAA Division II program starting in the 2027-28 academic year.
Our Story
Fred Powell, a national champion wrestler and Hall of Famer, built one of the most respected wrestling programs in the region as head coach at Slippery Rock University from 1967 to 1991. Under his leadership, The Rock compiled a 215-105-4 record, produced multiple All-Americans, and became a cornerstone of SRU athletics.
After the program was discontinued in 2006, alumni and supporters came together to form the Fred Powell SRU Wrestling Foundation, Inc. to honor Coach Powell’s legacy and successfully reinstate varsity wrestling at the NCAA Division II level for the 2027-28 season.
